Rubber dam clamps, also known as cofferdam clamps or molar clamps, are available in various shapes and sizes. A rubber dam clamp is used in combination with a rubber patch, also referred to as a rubber dam or cofferdam.

The rubber dam clamp must engage the tooth at certain critical contact points. The clamp is primarily intended to hold the rubber dam, which it does by its spring action below the contour height of a tooth. It may also help to slightly retract the gums.

Thanks to the use of a rubber dam in combination with the rubber dam clamp, the tooth or molar is isolated from the oral cavity to create a better view during treatment. This keeps the tooth or molar dry and free of bacteria and prevents small materials, including irrigation fluids, medicines or swarf from being swallowed.
